My Mom and Grandma decided to learn to play when I was in 7th or 8th grade. She also made sure if we wanted a set we had one. I have a set (as does Mom , grandma and my sister)
I have what we referred to as the little set, because the tiles in mine where smaller than the other sets. It's ivory and bamboo, the seasons and flowers aren't nearly as ornate as the ones on my Mom or Grandma's set.
I have no idea what age My set is, (or my Mom's). But my sister's set is a 60 or so year old faux Jade set that either has the Parker Brothers or Milton Bradley logo on the box. My Mom wrote the company after she bought the set to tell them we found one and we thought it was pretty cool, and they sent back a form letter about how glad they were we liked their products.
I dont get to play much anymore, but I'd like to find a few victims who live close to teach the game to. I have one friend who has expressed interest in learning to play.
It's a pity you live far away from us... we could play together sometimes. Now we have a tradition - every other Friday our friends come to our house and we play mahjong. We use the paper money from "Monopoly" :)
Our set came from China. Recently we bought two sets for our friends - these sets are from China too (I think), but they are less ornate and made from plastic.
I dont know where my set or my Mom's is from, but hers has the bamboo money, which we never used. I think we played a fairly american version of the game but I could be wrong about it.
The standing "game date" would be fun. When we where young my grandparents came over every friday so we played some sort of game. It was fun.

Why did you ask? Do you play mahjong too?
